It's got a decidedly different feel from the original A list hub - immortalized, for better or worse, by the Will Farrell flick "Night At the Roxbury" - but the new Rox is definitely as opulent as one might expect. In the space that was for many years known as Ivar, the decadent environs has been resuscitated by partner Elie Samaha (Playhouse) and there's a lot to look at, both decor and crowd-wise (Paris Hilton has hung out a couple times). Pleather roses on one wall, steel sculptures above the center bar and back-lit quotations brandish the walls everywhere. Currently, Fridays - promoted by Sean Patrick, Michael Utsinger and Louis Carreon with input from Giant's Dave Dean - get the biggest crowds. Look good (and have a good girl-to-guy ratio if in a group) or you may not get in. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.theroxyonsunset.com Since its opening in 1973, the Sunset Strip nightclub has presented a stellar array of musicians, comedians and theatrical revues, including Neil Young, Bob Marley, Rickie Lee Jones, Chuck Berry, Genesis, Bruce Springsteen, Miles Davis, David Bowie, the Clash, Prince, the Replacements, the Pharcyde, Jane's Addiction, Dolly Parton, the Dead Weather, the Dickies, Cobra Verde, Nellie McKay, the Ringling Sisters, Nirvana, the Sex Pistols, Pee-Wee Herman and the American theatrical debut of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The Ramones filmed the concert scenes for Rock & Roll High School here, and Van Morrison, Social Distortion and Warren Zevon are among the notable personalities who've recorded live albums in the West Hollywood club. Apart from a full-service bar, the main room and its dark walls (which feature photos of past performers) are austere and functional instead of lavishly decorated, but that's because the focus is on the musicians onstage. The adjoining upstairs lounge On the Rox hosts parties, DJs and live performances and has been the site of numerous celebrity sightings, going back to John Lennon's and Harry Nilsson's notorious lost weekend in the mid-1970s. Both venues are all ages with separate full bars. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.clubbang.net With a spacious layout that includes three dance floors and three bars, the Ruby is home to some of the city's liveliest and longest-running dance promotions: Thursday's spanking industrial-dance party Perversion, Friday's mix of multidecade dance dementia called Clockwork Orange and Saturday's electro-indie rock-hipster happening Club Bang! All parties are over 18, so in general this is a youthful romper-stomper with the focus on fashion and hooking up. Its Hollywood Boulevard location does shake up the usual club-kid clientele from time to time, though. Ruby's may not be a popular destination with 30-somethings or above, but for newbie night-hoppers, it's a perpetual pit stop. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.rusticcanyonwinebar.com Like so many other restaurants on the Westside, the food at the wine bar Rustic Canyon owes less to the standard bistro playbook than it does to the kind of cooking that French guys don't consider cooking at all: basically a compendium of what happens to be on the farmers market A-list that week collated with artisanal cheeses, sustainable meats, and lovingly handcrafted pastas. As cynics might say, that's not cooking, that's shopping. On the other hand, it is also more or less the strategy followed by places like Lucques and Chez Panisse at the moment. And when executed by a chef as skilled as Rustic Canyon's Evan Funke, whose goat cheese tortellone with fresh mint, duck breast with cherries, and sliced sunchokes sautéed with garlic are so fine, it seems like the only possible way to eat - his roasted root vegetable shepherd's pie couldn't have been better if it were made with hare or blood sausage rather than roasted turnips and parsnips, and I don't think I have a higher compliment I can pay. Zoe Nathan is the hot young pastry chef in town at the moment, and when you taste her rustic tarts or hot doughnut spheres with stone-ground hot chocolate you will understand why.
