Trip

Trip

Perched on the edge of Santa Monica, Trip is indeed a trip. From the outside, it looks like an everyday neighborhood bar, but the club is actually one of the Westside's leading hot spots, with nightly no-cover live music, comedy and burlesque.
The Redwood Bar & Grill

The Redwood Bar & Grill

A longtime haunt for politicians and journalists, this downtown bar hosts an endless parade of punks and roots rockers on its small, low stage, set against a festively nautical backdrop of fishing nets and mermaid paintings.
The Satellite

The Satellite

Once known as Spaceland and, before that, Pan, this Silver Lake bar continues to host before-they're-famous indie-rock bands alongside the occasional anti-comedian and film screening. Mondays are usually no cover.

  • Rhino Records Pop Up Store

    Rhino Records Pop Up Store

10952 Santa Monica Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90025

http://www.facebook.com/RhinoRecordsPopUp In what one hopes will be an annual tradition, the much-missed Rhino Records emporium in Westwood has been reincarnating itself as a pop-up store for the past two years at sites close to its classic old location. The store will be open for just a few more weeks, with Rhino hosting daily in-house concerts by rising indie-rock, garage and power-pop stars mixed with beloved favorites from the punk, folk and Paisley Underground past. Among the musicians who've already popped up at the store this year are the Bangles' Vicki Peterson, Avi Buffalo, Little Willie G, Evie Sands, the Muffs, Billy Vera, Thelonious Monster, the Lions, Kristian Hoffman, the Ruby Friedman Orchestra, and unexpected reunions of the Crawdaddys and the Balancing Act. Executive producer Gary Stewart and his volunteer crew are constantly adding surprise guests to previously booked bills, making each day a unique event and this humble Westside storefront the temporary center of the local club scene. This year, the concerts are held in a separate room with a real stage, good sound and a pro lighting system, which makes this part of the store feel like a real nightclub. The rest of the store, of course, features thousands of Rhino releases, DVDs, cutouts, rare LPs and CDs, posters and out-of-print bargains. The unusual nature of this event seems to attract both the hippest indie scenester and legendary hermits who haven't performed onstage in years, and you never know who might be browsing through the stack of albums next to you. All ages. Street parking. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

  • The Rhythm Lounge

    The Rhythm Lounge

245 Pine Ave. Long Beach, CA 90802
    562-435-4288

http://www.rhythm-lounge.com In its second-floor perch in downtown Long Beach, the large, concrete-floored, utilitarian space draws a largely African-American clientele, and hosts comics who poke fun at life's grittier experiences. (Look for comedienne D.D. Rainbow, who mixes the bitter with the sweet when she riffs on her father's experiences with dementia.) The full bar serves up stiff drinks and a modest selection of draft beers including the ever-delicious wheat ale, Blue Moon. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

  • Rick

    Rick's Tavern on Main

2907 Main St. Santa Monica, CA 90405
    310-392-2772

With walls cluttered with signs and other memorabilia celebrating the New York Yankees, Rick's Tavern on the Main can feel like a like a little bit of the Bronx on the south side of Santa Monica. Even the bar's black-&-white checkerboard-patterned floor reflects the baseball team's colors. The place is obviously a big-time sports bar, with several large screens blasting the games, but many of the locals drop by just for Rick's weekly burger nights. And, unlike many of the trendy bars along this stretch of Santa Monica, Rick's is unpretentious, casual and down to earth. With a sister bar in Amsterdam, you could even say that Rick's has a little bit of a Dutch flavor. The full bar also includes a patio for hanging out on warm days. The kitchen serves basic bar favorites like waffle fries, vegetarian chili, potato skins and burgers. Ages 21 & over. Street parking. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

  • Robin Hood British Pub

    Robin Hood British Pub

13640 Burbank Blvd. Van Nuys, CA 91401
    818-994-6045

http://www.robinhoodpub.net Run by British expatriates, this comfortable bar and restaurant is a spot-on authentic English pub located smack in the middle of Van Nuys. Its wooden paneled walls are covered with photos, keepsakes, ads for Boddingtons Ale and other mementos that evoke the United Kingdom, as well as, naturally, a large poster of Ridley Scott's Robin Hood film. Playing darts is one of the major obsessions at Robin Hood, with two dart boards for serious game playing and a wall festooned with plaques and trophies commemorating the bar's past darts champions. Two large flat-screen televisions are usually dialed into sports broadcasts, including rugby and soccer, and this unpretentious bar has a friendly staff and easygoing vibe that reminds Brits of a classic neighborhood pub in London. Robin Hood is divided into two main rooms, with a separate bar and a larger dining room. Apart from the intense darts competitions, the chief appeal at Robin Hood is its menu, featuring American fare like burgers and salads and such British standbys as bangers & mash, Cornish pastie and shepherd's pie. Many regulars, in fact, fervently insist that the pub's lightly battered fish & chips are the best they've ever had. Hot English teas are always available, and the bar serves up draft beers like Newcastle Brown Ale, Guinness, Tetley's, Harp and Bass. Full bar. Ages 21 & over. Street parking and in the free lot behind the pub. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

  • Rockwell Table & Stage

    Rockwell Table & Stage

1714 N. Vermont Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90027
    323-669-1550

http://www.rockwell-la.com How many lounges are there in Hollywood? You may as well ask how many grains of sand lie along the shore? But Rockwell, the sister of Los Feliz perennial Vermont, is actually a comfortable place to spend an evening, a highly architected space hidden off an alley where it is all but impossible to tell under the low lights what part of the dining room is inside and which is out, where the cocktail you have just been handed is a Lovely Pear or an oddball tincture of cucumber, or whether the couple two booths over is making out or just playing a spirited game of checkers. If you've dined after 11 anywhere near this zip code, you probably know what is going to end up on your plate, but the flatbread made with Spanish chorizo is a nice touch, the chicken is beautifully fried, and the truffled goat cheese ravioli taste a lot like truffles and goat, which has to be considered a victory under the circumstances. Roasted pineapple parfait? You don't have to ask us twice. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

  • Room 5 Lounge

    Room 5 Lounge

143 N. La Brea Ave., Second Floor Los Angeles, CA 90036
    323-938-2504

http://www.room5lounge.com You've almost certainly caught a glimpse of the glowing Amalfi Ristorante signage as you cruised up La Brea towards the thumping Hollywood clubs on some random Saturday night. But just upstairs is Room 5 Lounge, a compact music space with lots of soul. It also happens to have plenty to drink, thanks to the large bar downstairs. You can sip from the well if you're not feeling particularly pricey, or reach for the top shelf if the weekend music moves you – and do it all from the comfort of an overstuffed chair. Candles will dance as you snack on wood-fired salami and rapini pizzas or a creamy risotto with lamb medallions, and you'll find yourself nodding along to the slow strumming of an acoustic guitar from the next great musician you haven't heard of yet. Or make it a point to swing by once a month for the place's Opera on Tap series, which offers first-class arias from some of the city's best singers, at below balcony prices. • The Roost

    The Roost

3100 Los Feliz Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90039
    323-664-7272

http://www.igougo.com This somewhat rundown, barn-themed spot is a popular alternative on Los Feliz Blvd., especially for those who find nearby Bigfoot Lodge too loud and The Griffin up the street too much of a pick-up spot. Super-casual and dirt cheap (but bring cash, they don't do plastic), The Roost is a dive, but it comes alive on weekends, when hip twentysomethings from the area descend. Weeknights it's mostly regulars watching the tube and barfly types. Spacious seating, endless free popcorn from an old-fashioned machine (you serve yourself in tiny brown-paper bags) and an odd array of fixtures and decor (empty liquor bottles line the walls) continue to make the Roost an unassuming but comforting place to nest. • Roosterfish

    Roosterfish

1302 Abbot Kinney Blvd. Venice, CA 90291
    310-392-2123

http://www.roosterfishbar.com A Venice gay bar for more than 25 years, Roosterfish features electronic darts, a pool table, and a "no attitude" atmosphere. The laid-back watering hole also boasts pinball machines, but perhaps its biggest draw is the necessary escape it provides from West Hollywood, where gay bars are a dime a dozen and parties on the weekend crowd the streets. Once you’re off Santa Monica Blvd., you’ll be glad you made the trek. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

  • Rosen Music Studio

    Rosen Music Studio

    3488 W. 8th St. Los Angeles, CA 90005-2518
    213-387-0466

http://www.rosenla.com/index2.php#/home/ Notorious shower singers should give Rosen Music Studio in Koreatown a shot. The vibrant karaoke joint is perfect for single-person booth sessions for anyone who just wants to work on hitting those Mariah Carey high notes. You can harmonize all night long to an upbeat array of classics, or bring in a couple of trusted friends to offer advice. When all that singing gets you hungry, buzz the waitstaff and order up an oyster pancake or the steamed pork with bean sprouts. Dishes here skew towards seafood, but that's a good thing: you'll need to feel light on your feet for your second round of personalized karaoke. And when you're finally ready to show off your skills, book a chic, modern room full of eye-widening television screens that will make the whole room want to sing along. Just be sure to tell them that you're the star. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
