Feel like drinking with college-aged kids, but don’t want to go to Westwood? Head over to R Bar in Koreatown, where you’ll have to provide a password to get through the door, but once in, you will be delighted to find near-fetal looking revelers and a strange, pirate-y aesthetic, along with drink specials with names like the “Sweaty Mexican Lumberjack.” Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.rafaslounge.com Located just steps from the Echo nightclub in Echo Park, Rafa's Lounge is a comparatively low-key hangout, with live-music performances, art openings and even regular chess matches. The room's entrance is a nondescript doorway that's easy to miss on Sunset Boulevard, but, once you head down the stairs into the lounge's several adjoining rooms, you'll be amazed by the vibrant paintings and elaborate sculptures that decorate the gallery. Set off by a large glass porthole, the main room features a low stage where bands set up, just a few feet away from the beer-&-wine bar. Much of the artwork is for sale, as are the metal sculptures, which are welded and fabricated in house. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.ragewesthollywood.com Arguably, Rage is the throbbing heart of West Hollywood's bustling gay-nightlife scene, a circuslike fun house that's not for the timid or refined. The two-story restaurant and dance club offers greasy-good grub and big, sweet cocktail concoctions, served up by beefy waiters and all backdropped by loud, pulsating beats and lights. Multiple dance floors pump out everything from pop-tart hits to diva house grooves and more, and it all gets the boy-toy and "circuit" stud scenesters in grind mode. Currently, music-themed dance nights include: "Urban" dance sounds on Monday (Network), Latin sounds on Wednesday (Fuego), electro and pop and everything in between Friday (Gamboi) and Saturday (Kinky Saturdays) and Sunday (Stereo). Rage's most flam-BOY-ant night is hands-down Tuesday, when the wigged wonder of the Dream Girls Revue offers the art of female impersonation at its fiercest. http://www.rainbowbarandgrill.com Rainbow Bar & Grill is an ode to rock, with autographed photos lining the walls, vintage guitars scattered about, and visiting bands performing in the dim, mostly red space. At this Italian restaurant, "the rainbow special" is a popular pizza, with cheese stretching out of your mouth after each bite. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.redliontavern.net Bartenders in German barmaid garb pour all kinds of alcohol at this traditional German, European two-story gastropub. Expect colorful people, plentiful German beer, bratwurst, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, and a piano player. Order the Irish coffee for a pick-me-up. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.redroomrocks.com The only one of the Long Beach 4th street bars that routinely boasts a line to get in, Red Room is worth it-if you get there before everyone else does. Floor to ceiling red decor (surprise!)... or is it just the red light bulbs used to illuminate the place? There's a pool table in the center, but nights are usually too crowded to even consider playing a game. Weekends sport some pretty decent DJs, but if you're not in the mood to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the LB hipsters, stumble about 10 feet down the street to punk rock dive bar Fern's. http://www.redwhitebluezz.com Pairing fine wines with some of this town's best jazz musicians, Red White + Bluezz is a classy oasis of cool in Pasadena, and a key part of the city's ongoing nightlife renaissance. In-house sommeliers have assembled an astonishingly extensive wine list, with literally dozens of European and California wines, ranging from sparkling wines and "true" champagnes to old-world whites and new-world Bordeaux and Zinfandels. Wine is such a big deal here that the bar hosts regular classes and wine-tasting events. The menu starts with such appetizers as crab cakes and fried macaroni & cheese and continues with full courses like steak, lamb chops, ribs and lobster fettucine. The live entertainment is anything but background music, with regular gigs by local jazz stalwarts like Joe Lo Piccolo, Peter Smith, Doug MacDonald, Louis Van Taylor and Diane Hubka. The daily performances often include up to three sets per night. There is no cover, but reservations are recommended, especially for diners who want to sit near the stage. http://www.redcat.org REDCAT is an acronym for the Roy & Edna Disney/CalArts Theater, an arts center that's part of the Disney Hall complex and also affiliated with the CalArts campus. Since it's a smaller venue, REDCAT can take on edgier and more experimental fare than its roomier big brother, Disney Hall. REDCAT features an intimate, versatile 240-seat theater/performance space and an adjoining gallery for art exhibits, as well as a comfortably modern lounge and bar area. Events range from theater, concerts and multimedia experimentation, with appearances by everyone from comedian Sandra Bernhard to the transgender performance artist Justin Bond. Like Disney Hall, REDCAT was designed by the celebrated architect Frank Gehry, who wrapped the building's facade in a playful curvilinear wave of stainless steel, which is highlighted further by neon lighting. Inside, REDCAT is colorful and brightly lit, while the theater's acoustics and sophisticated dual sound system were designed and fine tuned for both live performances and film screenings. The wood-paneled lounge (which includes a small bookstore) is brightened with a skylight and flowering plants, and the bartenders serve beer, wine, cocktails and espresso. Parking is available in Disney Hall's adjoining underground parking lot. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.theredwoodbar.com Decorated with skulls & crossbones, fishing nets and maritime paintings, this pirate-themed downtown bar has a long and rich history. Roots-rock, punk and indie bands vie for attention on the club's small, low stage. A true pirate's bar, Redwood welcomes you with a "Yar." Eat your burger and fries, or mac and cheese with fries amid skull candles and the occasional dancing wench. Standard pub fare is offered here, but the décor and scene is far from it. http://www.reefrestaurant.com A lot of people tie the knot at the Reef Lounge. They do it for the evening views of the harbor. Everyone else can come to enjoy standards such as prime rib, waffle breakfasts and strong cocktails to wash it all down. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
