The upper-west level of Pasadena's Paseo Colorado complex is a catalog of mild modern sins, a promenade of cigar stores, wine bars and tea shops, crystal-laden boutiques and holistic-massage parlors, overlaid by a thin film of hot suburban lust. Fitting right in is the new Brazilian churrascaria Porto Alegre, a yawningly huge palace of the basest carnal appetites. Here, dripping rump roasts carved to order from superheated metal swords, fennel-laced sausages and plump chicken legs, crisp-skinned quail and fat prime rib, bacon-wrapped filets and an incongruous side of baked salmon are slipped onto your plate until you grab a waiter's lapels and shriek "Stop!"There is an enormous salad bar, of course, stocked with smoked salmon, prosciutto and hearts of palm as well as the usual suspects, and warm balls of cheese bread that expand in your belly like some magical diet aid - the establishment wants your stomach to be full for your $35.50 prix fixe. Porto Alegre is neither L.A.'s best churrascaria (that would be Fogo de Chao), its sexiest (By Brazil in Torrance), nor its sleekest (probably Burbank's Picanha). Its sisters, the massive Green Field restaurants in Covina, Long Beach and Queens, far surpass it in grandeur. Gaucho's Village in Glendale is homier. But in a mall whose other choices run to Tokyo Wako, Islands and P.F. Chang's, Porto Alegre might as well be the greatest restaurant in the world. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.pourhauswinebar.com Every bar in downtown L.A. seems to be jockeying for position when it comes to the best happy hour, but one at a wine bar reigns supreme: Pour Haus in DTLA’s warehouse district. Here, happy hour goes from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A select glass of red, white or sparkling wine is available for $5, as are assorted menu items, from oxtail tacos to bruschetta. For the detail-obsessed, trivia nights are Tuesdays. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.pourvousla.com The folks at Pour Vous, the newish Hollywood cocktail lounge, get nouveau cocktails right by looking for flavors that absolutely belong together but maybe haven't waltzed subtly in a glass before. But know your poison, or at least pretend to: The Parisian-themed bar, which doesn’t allow flip-flops or sneakers, boasts drinks like the Lapin Fou, which pairs eau de vie with carrot, ginger, lemon and the sweet herbal cordial Velay Jaune. You’ll look silly without a refined palette. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
Standing directly across the street from Hollywood and Highland's tourist circus of pricey shops, movie theatres, nightclubs, digital tickers and electronic billboards is the Power House, a gritty pit for rough and tumble types to congregate amidst loud music and lethal drinks. And while the place gets a notable rocker crowd (thanks to its amazing jukebox filled with punk and indie bands) there's also a sizeable mix of old timers and Walk of Fame-dwelling freaks who wander in, making it an amusing alternative to H&H's homogenized retail haven nearby. Out of towners looking for "old school" Hollywood do venture in from time to time, and most stay up front in the main room, soaking in the cheap drinks and the old room's dive-ness: mismatched booths, odd art assortment, requisite holiday lights and cracked peeling vinyl bar area. The smoking area in the back of the joint is another story. Venture there only if you dare. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>

http://www.prospectorlongbeach.com Gussied up in gold rush decor, this legendary watering hole evokes a saloon from the old west, or maybe Knott's Berry Farm. With a full complement of liquors, it's the spot to go for fried bar appetizers, and bourbon. A moderate beer selection includes Budweiser, Stella, Haywire Hef and Prospector Pale Ale. Most nights feature live music from local indie bands. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
Though older than its downtown sister, the Standard on the Sunset Strip retains its own set of fans. And why not? Andre Balazs' original has an unmatched quirky cool; from its upside-down sign and its lobby (with live model behind a glass window by the check-in desk) to the groovy retro-style pool area and desert-photo-wallpapered "Cactus" lounge. Still, the Standard's Purple Lounge reigns for flashy Barbarella-like sex appeal and flamboyant club frolic. The room features swings large enough to lie down on, plenty of plush couches and spacey plastic chandeliers everywhere you look. But it's the violet light that makes it truly an otherworldly place to party. DJs lean toward electro and house rhythms most nights, and the patrons include a mix of Euro-flashsters, trendy tourists and Hollywood entertainment mavens.
