http://www.figueroahotel.com This grand old downtown hotel is like a fascinating puzzle box, with each lavishly decorated room leading to an even more ornate bar or lounge area. Formerly a YMCA when it opened in 1925, the Figueroa was converted into a hotel after the Depression and has since been the site of numerous fashion and awards shows, stellar celebrity sightings and music events. The spacious, high-ceiling lobby is artfully appointed with Moroccan tiles and furnishings, as well as paintings, tapestries, candles, wrought-iron sculptures and lamps from all over the world. Just off to the side of the lobby and the hotel's check-in area lies the Fig Street Cafe, whose menu of pasta and steak entrees is rather limited in selection but is tasty and succulent nonetheless. After you pass through an elaborate hallway, you encounter the Veranda Bar, which is situated next to the hotel's outdoors glassy blue swimming pool. The full bar is a wonderful setting to while away the time after catching a concert at Club Nokia or a Lakers game at Staples Center, which are both just a block away down Figueroa Street. Guests can sit at tables by the pool or recline in an antique canopied bed just steps away from the bar. Hotel Figueroa actually features several bars and specialty rooms, including the music venues Club Fes, Room Tangier and Rabat, each decorated in a distinctly unique Moroccan style, and there are separate venues for weddings and other special events, notably the Nomad Lounge, Blue Door and Rick's Place. Clubgoers can also check in for the night in the hotel itself, which may be dwarfed by downtown's modern skyscrapers but is nonetheless an impressive, multistory edifice. http://www.hob.com/anaheim Arguably one of Orange County's best music venues, this House of Blues location is right in the middle of Downtown Disney. Though it's surrounded by toy stores, themed restaurants and other tourist traps, the bands that grace the stage here represent the top names in punk, metal and hardcore—as well as country, blues and pop. Aside from its superb sound system, House of Blues is also known for mixing up strong drinks from its full bar, which houses top-shelf labels such as Maker's Mark and Ketel One. If beer is better suited to your tastes, they have a nice selection of drafts, and their canned brews, which include PBR and Budweiser, come in the tall variety. The second floor balcony features seats and bar stools sometimes free for the sittin' (for popular shows, you'll have to be VIP, though, sorry). Unfortunately you have to pay for parking and tickets, unlike the dive bar down the street, but it's a well-kept venue and you wont find entertainment like this at your local hole in the wall. http://www.houseofblues.com The Porch at The House of Blues, only open for dinner, is as colorful as the building: Red curtains pulled back under open doorways, red-and-yellow ceilings, and walls with funky designs. The Southern-style fare of chicken-fried chicken, cajun meatloaf, and creole seafood jambalaya ranges from $10-$25 dollars. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.hustlercasinola.com Despite the sometimes dingy association with Larry Flynt and the publication that made him famous, the Hustler Casino in Gardena is L.A.'s best-manicured card room. Plush red walls hide unwanted acoustics, and the soft snap of fresh cards is muted with every deal on the vibrant felt tables. The crowd is an eclectic mix of workaday locals, bewildered tourists who couldn't find Vegas on a map, and hungry sharks, eager to gobble up loose bets. Yet the play is always friendly, the staff congenial, the beer mugs frosty and the parking ample. For a close-to-home casino with a name brand that might put off some folks, Hustler Casino is the surprising crown jewel of L.A.'s poker room circuit. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.hyperiontavern.com This tiny Silver Lake bar is almost literally a hole in the wall burrowed into the side of a hill. There is no sign marking the location, save for a glowing red-and-white-striped barbershop pole that beckons passersby. Hyperion Tavern is about the size of a living room, with a small stage, a DJ booth, a piano, a dance floor that's almost an afterthought and a wooden bar crowded into the diminutive space. Distinguishing features include chandeliers, a wall lined with bookshelves and a cash register mounted with a large silver medallion commemorating JFK. Formerly the site of the notorious leather bar Cuffs, the l'il tavern is now the spot for a notoriously adventurous range of weekly DJ nights. Beer only. Ages 21 & over.
