http://www.jdvhotels.com/dining/losangeles/high From seven floors above the Venice Beach boardwalk, it's easy to forget that the rest of Los Angeles exists. That's precisely the point at High Rooftop Lounge, which is nestled on top of the chic boutique Hotel Erwin along a particularly photogenic stretch of ocean real estate. Forget the smoggy views from downtown or the elbow-to-elbow crowds in Hollywood. At High, the main attraction is the 360-degree view; the stellar cocktail menu is simply a bonus. The Blood Orange Julep is particularly satisfying, a delicate mix of small batch bourbon, aromatic mint and fruity bitters that will warm you up faster than the lap blankets provided by the establishment. If you feel like snuggling after the sun's gone down, order a plate of yellowfin tuna tartare from the LED-illuminated menu and grab a seat amongst the clutter of upscale patio furniture if you can. http://www.thechurchoffashion.com The "157" stands for this old Victorian house's ranking on the list of California Historical Landmarks, but when it comes to the best alternative entertainment -- live music, dance events (square dance socials!) and off-the-wall workshops -- HM ranks much higher. It's one of the most unusual locales in Los Angeles. Run by the groovy, good-vibrations-touting Church of Fashion group, 157 is essentially a living art space, with the bulk of its patrons and promoters coming from L.A.'s most creative communities. Many events here have a decidedly retro feel (vaudeville, old blues) and the layout lends itself to a variety of offerings. The indoor area is fully furnished, with a cozy, lived-in vibe, while the expansive outdoor patio offers great acoustics for live acts and plenty of space for stomping the house down. http://www.hollywoodstudiobarandgrill.com This intimate live-music bar and restaurant is tucked into the Gower Gulch mini-mall, which was once the stellar nexus of early Tinseltown history. These days, the club presents a similarly stellar assortment of top-flight jazz musicians, as well as comedy, blues, flamenco and pop showcases. Presented by Dolores Peterson, the club's signature weekly open mic features such redoubtable jazz vets as pianist-leader Karen Hernandez, bassist Tony Dumas and drummer Ralph Penland backing up sometimes heavy surprise guests. And yet, located at the busy intersection of Sunset Boulevard and the aptly named El Centro Avenue in the heart of Hollywood, the room's vibe is convivial and calming instead of brassy and showy. Booths along the wall and small tables on the wooden floor face a low stage wedged in the corner, where the performers hover palpably close to diners. Black-&-white photos of legendary musicians are framed on wood-paneled walls, while the booths are adorned with elaborate touches like semi-circular, inverted-pyramid-shaped Art Deco-style lamps. The cover and minimums vary but are generally low, with some drinks and entrees priced moderately higher. Chef Juan Mercado's continental menu includes favorites like spinach quesadilla, gazpacho and the salmon mango salad. The restaurant has a small outdoor patio, and, in a true Hollywood rarity, free parking in the mini-mall's lot. Full bar. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.homesilverlake.com Located on the eastern edge of Silver Lake in the space that used to house Rudolpho's, Home is an aptly named restaurant that specializes in homemade, down-home American comfort food, including burgers, wraps, pizzas and such entrees as Southern fried chicken, steak and pasta. The restaurant features two full bars, including one in the tree-lined outdoor patio, which is a tranquil oasis with its bubbling fountain and koi pond. Entertainment ranges from karaoke to weekly DJ nights, and the indoor bar's two large television screens are dedicated to round-the-clock sports events. The decor is a melange of old-time photos, Dodgers posters and carhop culture, and the inside bar blends wood paneling with brick walls. Like its sister location in Los Feliz, Home is a "a kid and pet friendly restaurant," with street parking and valet parking in an adjoining lot. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Takeout available. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.hooters.com Home of the double entendre, the Hooters chain has become an American icon over the course of its short life. Founded in Florida during the glorious 1980s, the company with a hooting owl for a logo boasts its own magazine, a hotel on the Las Vegas Strip, and famous alumni like Hugh Hefner's former girlfriend Holly Madison. The Hooters girls at each of the 450 locations are the heart and soul (or is it the "T and A"?) of the company; from the American Midwest to the Czech Republic to Tokyo, every girl sports the same bright orange short-shorts, flesh-colored pantyhose and white sneakers. Perhaps it could be the food that keeps loyal Los Angeles customers coming back. The menu focuses on chicken wings, with sauces ranging from mild to atomic, but there are also seasoned curly fries, shrimp, oysters, crab legs, burgers, and sandwiches, along with plenty of televisions tuned to whatever's going on in the sports world. http://www.hoplouiela.com Hop Louie is not a destination for great Chinese food, but it is a cultural artifact. Built in Chinatown in 1941, the cocktails are cheaper than what you’d pay at other spots – particularly in the nearby downtown area – and the vibe is kitschy enough to make you not care that the food is only mediocre. However, if you're going to order some eats, go for the crab Rangoon, egg rolls or fried rice. And in the meantime, enjoy the jukebox filled with classic pop oldies, the makeshift dance floor, and the much appreciated low-key vibe. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.hotelcafe.com This live-music bar is more than just an inviting room for singer-songwriters to muse on their broken Hollywood dreams, half-baked romantic schemes and all that sort of stuff. The Hotel Cafe has become so synonymous with a certain style of mainstream yet high-level pop music that it annually presents its own national tour featuring folks like Cary Brothers. Other past performers and longtime regulars include such tunesmiths as Jesca Hoop, Meiko, John Mayer, Nellie McKay, Weezer, Jim Bianco, Terra Naomi, Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard, Dar Williams, Pegi Young and Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano. Since 2000, the former small coffeehouse, located just south of Hollywood Boulevard, has expanded into two rooms with full bars. The glittery front bar evokes a vintage Tinseltown hotel lobby, while the second and larger room is darker, with spherical hanging lamps casting a muted glow over a low stage and a stark red-velvet curtain. The cafe's menu includes paninis, salads, quesadillas and, in a nod to its coffeehouse past, a range of espresso specialties. Ages 21 & over. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
