Based in the lobby of the Hotel Alexandria, the Down & Out lives up to its name with dozens of celebrity mugshots scattered on the walls throughout the spacious bar. Large arrest photos of Charlie Sheen, James Brown, Lindsay Lohan and other unfortunate stars were even blown up to poster size and mounted behind the bar. Against the front wall, a mockup of a police lineup is ready to go for patrons who'd like to shoot their own mug shots. Despite all this emphasis on bad behavior, the Down & Out's regulars seem undeterred by the risks of partying too much as they line up at the bar. The downtown club has many distractions to keep barflies out of trouble and out of jail, including a row of vintage pinball machines and several pool tables. Barrio Tiger's Jimmy James books weekly hard-rock and underground-music nights, making the Down & Out one of the key places for real rock & roll in the heart of downtown. Ages 21 & over. Street parking. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.thedraftbarandgrill.com The Studio City sports bar The Draft Bar & Grill is what you dreamed of as a 16-year-old boy. Here, pool tables and posters of scantily clad women mesh with Babe Ruth iconography, bean bag chairs and video games. From beer pong tournaments to nights with no cover charge for UFC fights, The Draft is a young boy's paradise come to life – and with a liquor license to boot. It's hard to find the bar from behind the nearly 30 TVs or over the rolling din of various sports fans, but when you do, order a pitcher of beer. At $15 for Sierra Nevada, it's a steal, and pairs well with the typical bar food being served here: burgers, hot dogs and a towering Triple Double club sandwich. http://www.celestinodrago.com Celestino Drago has been the king of pasta in Los Angeles since Kraft dinners were in fashion. The casual yet rigorous pan-Italian cooking at his various dining rooms helped define the way Angelenos think about Italian food, and the Drago family seems to collect restaurants - Il Pastaio, Celestino, Enoteca Drago, Panzanella, Dolce Forno, and the upcoming Drago Centro and Via Alloro among others - the way your 12-year-old brother collects baseball cards. But you will most often spot his mournful, bearded countenance at Drago, working the door, barking at a sous-chef, following a bit of roast venison or stewed boar out into the dining room as if he had shot it himself. The careful braising and sweet-and-sour flavors that are characteristic of Drago's style really come into focus when he is stuffing boned-out quail with dense sausage, cooking pheasant with mushrooms for a pasta sauce or simmering boar until it all but implodes. http://www.thedragonfly.com This longtime Hollywood bar has always been a rock & roll mainstay, but it also hosts frequent comedy and theatrical revues, including the ongoing "Point Break Live," a comedic parody of the old Keanu Reeves film. Other entertainment ranges from drum-&-bass nights, jello wrestling and "Rebel Fucking Bingo" to burlesque and "Natalie Fabia's Hooker Pageant." The Buzzcocks, the Spazmatics and Abby Travis are among the many performers who've appeared on the Dragonfly's stage. A large painting of a temptress with large dragonfly wings dominates the backdrop of the stage and serves as the club's logo, while a long wooden bar runs along one side of the room. Large mirrors on the walls give the club a sense of Tinseltown elegance and opens up the dark space. In total, the Dragonfly has four full bars operating, especially on busy weekend nights. There's also a brick-walled back patio for those looking for a breath of fresh air and a rare glimpse of a different kind of Hollywood stars. Full bar. Ages 21 & up. http://www.draishollywood.com Drais, the super-swank dance palace atop the W Hotel Hollywood is an unmatched extrasensory experience ($15 million worth). Vegas impresario Victor Drai (and partners Cy & Jesse Waits) have created a stunner of a club: go-go gals writh on gilded stripper-pole lamps, plush and roomy booths abound, opulent textures, mirrors and lighting gleam everywhere, and there's an outdoor pool area with cabana furniture to rival any ritzy living room. The kicker is the view, which - if you peek between the curtains that surround the place or go out on the main balcony - is incredible and almost vertigo-inducing (at least after a $15 cocktail). It may have one of the toughest doors in town, but that doesn't mean there's a lack of douchey dudes and lycra-wrapped ladies here like everywhere else. Luckily, the Metro station is right next to the entrance. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
For over 35 years, seven days a week, 365 days a year, this family-owned mini-mall bar has opened at 6 a.m., doing good biz, even early, with film crews, graveyard shifters and sleepless in Silver Lake-rs looking for a lowkey hole to crawl in. The Asian-themed room (a giant dragon replaced a map of the U.S. several years ago on the main wall and random red lanterns are strewn about), offers dark hues, friendly pourers, and a relaxed atmosphere. People come here and stay thanks to the electronic dartboard, TV above the bar, and cozy booths, but it's the prices that keep 'em coming: they start at $3.50 and average about $5. http://www.thedresden.com Open for over 60 years, this Hollywood landmark had its moments in the limelight, with stints in movies such as Swingers and That Thing You Do. Live lounge music plays as you take your seat in one of the round booths in the dining room, checking out the menu for seafood as well as meat dishes such as prime rib and roast rack of lamb. For serious meat eaters, there is the Chateaubriand for two. Read more about this Los Angeles bar or club >>
http://www.dustysbistro.com Chandeliers made of stained glass hang over a shiny wooden bar with short cushioned stools at Dusty's, an American/French bistro in Silver Lake. With well-dressed blood-red lamps, "it almost feels like a brothel," explained one of the owners. The quaint, artsy restaurant serves eclectic fare such as the Scheherazade salad, with hummus, eggplant caviar and baby greens; poutine (French fries blanketed by warm mozzarella and gravy); and the chicken Napoleon soaked in a cream and butter sauce.
