Named "Best Gay Bar in the World" by the Logo channel, the Abbey is fun whether you're gay, straight or undecided, a regular jumping-off point for epic nights out in WeHo. Considerably more relaxed during the day, it's one of those rare and treasured L.A. establishments - a place where you can make out in the bathrooms by night, and take your mom for lunch the next day. You'll spot everyone from Perez Hilton to the cast of The L Word in this legendary haunt, and do treat yourself to a martini; the list features every fruit and berry flavor under the LGBTQ rainbow. Owner David Cooley, who founded the Abbey in 1991 as a small coffee shop, frequently hosts star-studded fund-raising galas at the venue, and his Oscar-night party, "The Envelope Please," raises more than $150,000 for AIDS Project L.A. each year. Become a regular, and you might just figure out how to gatecrash. The food goes beyond typical bar fare, with dishes such as an Ahi burger, Atlantic salmon, New York steak and custom omelets. Relax in the tastefully faux-goth environment (votive walls inside, gargoyles outside … and some cabanas) and gawk at the impossibly good-looking bar staff, whose sexual orientation may well depend on the size of the tip you choose to leave them, or which producer you work for.     It may be located in Long Beach's trendy Belmont Shore, but the Acapulco Inn is anything but high-falutin. Instead of ritzy, vintage photos of the Long Beach harbor, the walls are bedecked with the banners of various college football teams. The rowdy voices echoing across the large, cement-floored room indicate patrons don't appreciate fancy accouterments. Serving beer only, several taps are line up in a neat row behind the bar. They especially can’t deny its status as the largest host of Oktoberfest in L.A. (the website even has a daily countdown to that special time of year), which can get as rowdy as a soccer hooligan fight. The village stages other big celebrations throughout the year, from classic car shows to Mardi Gras. Whatever the occasion, revelers can count on fifteen beers on tap and good German and Eastern European grub. Offerings include pub snacks like giant pretzels and sausages in the oompah-blaring beer hall and classier fare, like plates of stuffed cabbage, wienerschnitzel and goulash in the two-level Alpine Village Inn restaurant, which is where you’ll find senior couples dancing the waltz, cha-cha or foxtrot. Owner and British expat Judah Casburn (former owner of Pasadena mainstay Lucky Baldwins) and his wife Gail opened the local dive in 2010, creating an atmosphere that’s conducive to conversation, playing pool or watching a quiet game on TV. The food is simple – mostly pizza, cheese plates and chips you can snack on while drinking from the list of nearly a dozen draft beers, including English ales, domestic and Belgian beers, as well as a lengthy list of mostly-French wine. The owners have not only been Altadena residents for more than two decades, but Gail Casburn even ran for a seat on the Altadena City Council; a great way to give back to the community, twice.     http://www.amplyfi.com This cool underground club is hidden in plain sight, right across the street from Paramount Studios and just around the corner from Astroburger on Melrose Avenue at Gower Street. There is no sign, and you have to enter through the back entrance after walking halfway down the block through the alley. Look for the green door surrounded by show flyers, with "AMPLYFI" written in small black letters. The club is the brainchild of the noted singer-songwriter Kota Wade, who, at age 19, opened the intimate venue in January 2011, converting her private rehearsal studio into a public, all-ages performance space. Evoking Hollywood's storied underground music clubs, the cozy venue (with a capacity of 70 people) feels like a hip living room decorated with colorful Pop Art, lava lamps, gold records, mannequins and vintage photos of Jane Fonda. Professional lighting and a good sound system make Amplyfi feel like a real nightclub without losing the charm of its DIY setting. Kota presents a wide range of singer-songwriters, indie-pop musicians and hard rockers, and she sometimes jumps onstage herself.
