You Don't Know Alvin
If there is anyone who has not yet savored the delights of choreographer Alvin Ailey's Revelations, the next two weeks offer 10 opportunities to revel in his glorious evocation of American gospel music seen through the prism of his childhood memories of southern Texas. For those who haven't seen the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in a while, this visit is a propitious time to become reacquainted, as the extended season marks the swan song of artistic director Judith Jamison and a preview of what to expect when artistic director designate Robert Battle assumes her mantle next season. An astonishing dancer, Jamison segued from being Ailey's muse to his successor as artistic director; she nurtured his legacy while expanding the company's artistic vision and establishing her own choreographic credentials. An electric dancer in his own right, Battle inherits a major company with gorgeous dancers and a wide-ranging repertoire, a good sampling of which is displayed in four different programs, with Revelations the finale for each. For those who beat the traffic, company members are part of the "Dance Talks" one hour before the show.
