Who Doesn't Love Danny Kaye?
Tonight's "Holiday Salute to Danny Kaye" brings together people from the legendary physical comic's life Danny Kaye Show choreographer Tony Charmoli; his daughter, Dena Kaye; producer George Schlatter, possibly Carl Reiner and others to discuss the sextuple threat (actor, dancer, gourmand, humanitarian and conductor) who's well-overdue for a revival in this age of retro and retrospection. Not only did he star in White Christmas a film that sits squarely in the pantheon of holiday traditions on par with Capra and Linus but the recent timely DVD release of Christmas With Danny Kaye showcases the holiday episodes of his Emmy-winning variety series The Danny Kaye Show (CBS, 1963-67). Rare clips and reminisces abound in this celebration of a man who played everyone from Walter Mitty to Hans Christian Andersen to a court jester. He was also UNICEF'S first Goodwill Ambassador in 1954 goodwill being a quality that remains underrated in this era of Holy Land bombings and Black Fridays. Paley Center for Media, 465 N.
