WHO DO THAT DOO DAH?
If Michael Jackson rose from the dead carrying Bubbles the chimp in one arm and Emmanuel Lewis in the other, he still wouldn't be the strangest person at the 34th Occasional Doo Dah Parade, which, for the first time, is relocating to East Pasadena away from Old Town's trendy shops and eateries. Since it was created in 1978 as an alternative to the Tournament of Roses Parade (because watching high school marching bands and countless ways to decorate with carnations and pumpkin seeds can only be entertaining for so long), the Doo Dah has over the years given us The Briefcase Drill Team, The BBQ and Hibachi Marching Grill Team, The Shopping Cart Drill Team, The Bastard Sons of Lee Marvin, Flying Baby Street Racing and parade house band Snotty Scotty and The Hankies. Many of those crowd pleasers return this year, with the addition of parade Queen Erica Valentine and grand marshal Corky Peterson, owner of Chromo's, the former Pasadena bar where the idea for the spoof parade was born -- further proof that knocking back a few leads to creativity. Bring a lawn chair, but watch out for motorized sofas and packs of dachsunds.
