Wherever You Go, There You Are
To the list of adjectives describing the work of New York-based artist Ryan McGinness obsessive, sumptuous, sexy, witty, bright, fierce, sleek we now must add ubiquitous, topical and nudie. In what the artist has described as an "L.A. incursion," his work will appear in something like seven venues throughout May and into June. In addition to designing the bidding paddles for the LACE Benefit Auction (May 19), an exhibition surveying major paintings of the last several years along with new canvases at Michael Kohn Gallery also opens May 19 (continuing through July 1 at 8071 Beverly Blvd). Country Club L.A. inaugurates its new Hollywood space with "Ryan McGinness: Works on Paper," featuring a kaleidoscopic array of prints, drawings and other mixed-media works that show a more raw and intimate side to the artist's omnivorous appetite for the distilled signs and symbols of everyday existence. Speaking of intimate, the Standard Hollywood presents a new installation of McGinness' blacklight painting series The Women; the Standard Downtown's mural wall gets an original work; and both locations prepare related live drawing and other events, May 28-June 11. Lastly, their shop releases the artist's most accessible works of all: packs of Nudie Playing Cards based on the blacklight paintings.
Mondays-Fridays. Starts: May 20. Continues through July 16, 2011
