Trish Stone's Lighter Than Air
Who says drones come only from the military-industrial complex or your dull college professor? San Diego artist Trish Stone's Lighter Than Air happening features a big, red weather balloon that’s a drone; outfitted with a video camera, it’s given to participants who help in its deployment. Some fly the balloon. Others hold mirrors that communicate with the aerial-surveillance device. Stone has explored the use of security cameras before in her work -- her project Things I Never Say featured publicly accessible webcams in San Diego as a venue for her public performance. The final documentation of Lighter Than Air -- a visual triptych of everything that transpires today -- will be installed in a gallery at Human Array in San Pedro on Sept. 6. With the size and scope of the modern world of drones, there’s probably one watching you as you enter and exit. Smile for the camera! Angels Gate Cultural Center, 3601 S. Gaffey St., San Pedro; Sun., Aug. 12, 1 p.m.; free. (310) 519-0936, angelsgateart.org.
