Tour de Frogtown
It's time for another edition of de LaB's annual Design-n-Dim Sum Bike Ride -- a full day of art and architecture studio visits, fixed gears and savory small plates. Design East of La Brea organizes unique tours of underappreciated historical locales throughout the year; the Design-n-Dim Sum bike tour is its most popular. A small but dedicated group of urban cyclists meets up at Highland Park's coolest bike shop at 11 a.m., and by 11:30 the tour de force is under way. Over the course of about nine miles, the tour hits Glassell Park, Frogtown and Chinatown, with stops at three of the Eastside's most engaging and innovative artisans. Furniture maker Stefan Bishop has a quirky, modernist way of bringing out found wood's inner showstopper qualities. Architect Astrid Diehl and artist/designer Eddy Sykes share their living and working space in unique symbiosis, while ceramics artist Tracy Wilkinson infuses her objects with elements of the living and natural world. The tour is free if you have your own bike. It's worth noting that renting one costs $15 and dim sum is $20 -- and both those items require not only cash but a timely RSVP for headcount purposes. Or you can drop in at points along the way by means of whatever mode of transport you see fit -- just follow de LaB on Twitter to keep up. Flying Pigeon Bike Rentals, 3404 N. Figueroa St., Highland Park; Sun., June 2, 11 a.m.; free (bike and bao billed separately). designeastoflabrea.org.
