To the Streets

Escape the crushing traffic this Sunday by heading to a part of the city where all motors are banned. CicLAvia is celebrating its third anniversary with the Heart of L.A., its eighth and latest attempt to liberate the people of L.A. from their steering wheels. From 9 a.m.to 4 p.m., streets will be closed to traffic so 150,000 bicyclists can take an eco-friendly tour of the city's historic districts, with scheduled rest stops in MacArthur Park, Chinatown, Mariachi Plaza and the African American Firefighters Museum. But this isn't the Tour de France, and you don't need a bike to participate -- feel free to jog, roller skate or simply stroll the 7.5 miles to the finish line. The route winds through the lively downtown area, with Grand Park as the central destination -- CicLAvia is throwing a party complete with food, music and an emphasis on L.A.'s cultural diversity. MacArthur Park, 2230 W. Sixth St., Westlake; Sun., Oct. 6, 9 a.m.-4p.m.; free. (213) 355-8500, ciclavia.org/events.
