Tim Burton's Been Busy
In recent years, as he has transitioned from auteur of cult-favorite fantasies to helmer of major blockbusters, L.A. native son Tim Burton has polarized some film fans while simultaneously gaining a whole new generation of followers. (For our part, we're seriously considering our willingness to finally forgive him for Planet of the Apes if he manages to pull off an awesome Dark Shadows movie!) Yet one aspect remains unchanged: Even when working with iconic source material that has been adapted multiple times over, from Sweeney Todd to Alice in Wonderland, every production's whimsical design has remained unmistakably Burton. This week LACMA opens the eponymous exhibit "Tim Burton," with more than 700 "drawings, paintings, photographs, moving-image works, storyboards, puppets, concept artworks, maquettes, costumes and cinematic ephemera" encapsulating the boy from Burbank's rise to goth visionary.
Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: May 29. Continues through Oct. 31, 2011
