The Wild Side of Ballet
As a dancemaker, Harlem-born-and-bred Darrell Grand Moultrie draws on a background that includes training at Julliard, performing in Broadway shows including the recent Billy Elliot, and garnering a coveted Princess Grace choreography award. Earlier this year, his Jazzin' for the Sacramento Ballet was a standout in a new choreography program that included contributions from such heavyweights as Septime Weber and Edward Liang. Watching Jazzin', it was evident Grand Moultrie had serious choreography chops, but his deft hand at humor and insightful drawing out of the wilder side of those ballet dancers gave notice of a truly significant talent. SoCal gets a look at Grand Moultrie's work at the National Choreographers Initiative (NCI) this week. For the past three weeks, Grand Moultrie has been one of a quartet of the dancemakers working with a dozen top-notch dancers on hiatus from major U.S. companies and charged with developing new choreography. Among the other three choreographers, Melissa Barak returns for her second NCI while Thang Dao and Wendy Seyb make their debuts. The annual summer gathering concludes with this single performance and panel discussion led by Lynch.
