The Secret Garden

With all the bars in Los Angeles, it's easy to get nice and wasted weekend after weekend (or weekday after weekday; we won't judge). But if you take a leaf from drink-making history, you can get good and tipsy in your backyard. That's what author Amy Stewart reveals in her book Drunken Botanist: The Plants that Create the World's Great Drinks. The author will visit Vroman's for a signing and reading as part of her current book tour, which, incidentally, includes a few stops at bars. Co-founder of the blog GardenRant and former writer for the New York Times and other publications, Stewart knows her drinks and plants. Flip through the book and you'll discover not only the historical relationship between plants and good drinks, but also useful recipes and gardening tips. And if you wonder whether all this alcohol is good for your health, check out this tidbit Stewart unearthed: A vitamin C-loaded beer brewed by Captain James Cook got rid of his crew's scurvy.
