Even as The National's popularity has grown rapidly over the past few years, lead singer Matt Berninger still appears ambivalent about fame, titling the Brooklyn group's sixth album Trouble Will Find Me. "I keep feeling smaller and smaller," he croons in a wounded baritone against a sparse backing, as the guitars of brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner flicker and twist and circle around his words like crows. Elsewhere, Berninger intones, "I should live in salt for leaving you behind." But even as he sounds as if he's giving in to his own rueful sadness, the rest of the band picks him up with stirring, anthemic chords and wistfully consoling melodies. Tonight, The National performs a full set in addition to a screening of Mistaken for Strangers, the new band documentary filmed by Berninger's brother Tom.
