When Florida country-rockers The Mavericks formed in 1989, they developed an idiosyncratic mix of well-chilled, old-school rock influences, straight-ahead country and hot blue balladry, one perfected in down-and-dirty Sunshine state rock clubs. After the band landed their 1991 deal with Nashville juggernaut MCA, they operated as a complete anomaly, trying to make headway in a world ruled by such thunderingly obtuse meatheads as Garth Brooks and Billy Ray Cyrus. Nonetheless, buoyed mightily by Cuban-American vocalist Raul Malo's passionate pipes, The Mavericks not only prevailed but also left behind a string of sharply individualistic albums. Back in action for this special 25th-anniversary wing-ding after an eight-year absence, they're sure to deliver a heartfelt gasser of a show.
