The Bitch Is Back
Julia Roberts' name above the upcoming film confirms choreographer Angelin Preljocaj's contention that despite the title, the character Snow White is not nearly as interesting as the wicked queen and the mirror that incites her murderous efforts on behalf of beauty. Preljocaj and his company are known in France for his abstract ballets, but seem to tour with stories. Last visit, Preljocaj brought his Romeo and Juliet set in a totalitarian, futuristic world reminiscent of Blade Runner. This time, his Snow White comes draped in costumes by Jean Paul Gaultier with the Evil Queen garbed a la dominatrix, her innocent target strategically draped in white and the Prince with an enormous zipper relocated to the back of his pants. The music is gleaned from various Mahler symphonies and accompanies Preljocaj's dance and aerial inventions for the seven dwarves and the soaring spirit of Snow White's mother. Preljocaj's Snow White is an interesting choice for a town that celebrates Botox, lasers and other potentially poisonous substances to be self-inflicted in the name of prolonging youthful beauty.
