That's Amore, and Much More
Ah, love! Ah, lust! Ah, hell. As part of the Michelangelo Antonioni retrospective for the Thursday Night at Cinematheque Series, Cal State Northridge professor Tim Halloran discusses and screens Beyond the Clouds (Al di là delle nuvole), a film about all three of the aforementioned. Men have been befuddled, confused and downright captivated by women since the dawn of time. This 1995 film, made after Antonioni recovered from a stroke, is a fascinating four-part exploration of the ways men are attracted to women and vice versa. John Malkovich plays a filmmaker (possibly Antonioni himself) who plans to do his next film about women and the men who love them. Just like any relationship doomed or meant to be, there are haunting scenes, whining, plaintive ruminations, brooding and soul-searching, all punctuated by the coupling and uncoupling of lovers. Manzanita Hall, Cal State Northridge, 18111 Nordhoff St.; Thurs., May 10, 7 p.m.; free. (818) 677-3000, movies.csun.edu.
