Swan Angeles

The success of the film Black Swan sparked renewed interest in the deeply romantic ballet that inspired the Oscar-winning movie. The new audience piqued by the film can join long-time ballet fans as L.A.'s own professional ballet company unveils a new full-length production of Swan Lake. The choreography from Los Angeles Ballet's artistic directors Thordal Christensen and Colleen Neary draws on the original Petipa/Ivanov choreography, but also is informed by Christensen's tenure as artistic director of the Royal Danish Ballet and the couple's own history performing the ballet as principal dancers at Pacific Northwest Ballet. LAB spotlights its own principal dancers as Allyssa Bross and Allyne Noelle dance the dual role of the white swan Odette and the evil black swan Odile in alternate performances while Christopher Revels and frequent guest artist Kenta Shimizu portray Prince Siegfried. Blessed with some of Tchaikovsky's most romantic music, Swan Lake is brilliant, enthralling, demanding, always a milestone ballet for a company, and this production reflects LAB's coming of age.  Swan Lake is LAB's sixth full-length ballet in six years and also marks the addition of two new venues. With Swan Lake taking the stage at five SoCal theaters over the month of March, LAB continues to make good on its promise to bring great ballet to all of greater L.A.
