Sink or Win

Life is but a dream when kids and adults can row, row, row their handmade boats in the very pool in which Marion Davies once submersed herself. The second annual Cardboard Yacht Regatta is a weird and wacky race for two-person teams who have constructed their own watercraft from corrugated cardboard bound with duct tape. The creativity doesn't stop there, though; each paddle-powered vessel is a work of art. Last year's Ninjago Kitty, an L.A. Kings boat and the S.S. Leafy stole the show. Approximately 40 teams are expected to attempt the crossing of the 33-yard pool, three vessels per heat. Whether yachts make it to the finish line -- or pool wall -- matters little. Those that sink or mates who abandon ship still qualify to compete for top awards such as Best Theme, Most Likely to Sink and, for fanciest (natch), the Marion Davies Award.
