Short Cuts

For the better part of five years, Open Projector Nights have anticipated the rise of YouTube culture and countered it with an even more worthwhile proposition: Make your own films and show them off publicly to witness the fruits of your creative labors -- even when those fruits are picked off the tree and thrown back at you. Hosted by twin comics Randy and Jason Sklar (current hosts of History Channel's statistical anomaly United Stats of America), it's a short-film festival at which the audience, hopped up on free popcorn, watches 10-minute epics (on VHS, DVD, Mini DV & Mini HDV, Super 8, 8mm and 16mm film; sadly, no flip-it books allowed), and votes with applause, either cheering or hissing like reptiles for the agony to end. Do you have the guts to bare your cinematic soul to the masses -- or are you terrified at the prospect of having your nerves ripped apart by hot buttered scorn? Hammer Museum, 10899 Wilshire Blvd., Wstwd.; Tues., July 23, 7 p.m.; free. (310) 443-7000, hammer.ucla.edu.
