She’s a Big Girl Now

April Flores is many things to many people. As a plus-size glamour model, she is an icon of the new body-image politics that values other paths to sex appeal besides plastic perfection. As a performer and entertainer, she is a cult favorite among a broad audience that includes feminists, LGBT and, increasingly, high-brow arbiters of indie culture. And most saliently for today's two-part adventure, she is muse and model to her husband, photographer Carlos Batts. The good times start this afternoon at MOCA's Ahmanson Auditorium on Grand Avenue, where Flores and Batts discuss and sign copies of their new collaborative tome, Fat Girl -- a gorgeous, titillating, funny and smart book of erotic photography, which the pair describes as "a glimpse into a world where sex, love and art collide." Later in the evening, the party moves downhill to Coagula Curatorial on Chung King Road, where Batts and Flores open an exhibition of photographs from the book as part of a Perform Chinatown indoor/outdoor performance-art series, which also features a nail bar by Cha Cha Covers, cupcakes by Little Sweeties and a spanking station sponsored by the Pleasure Chest. Gallerygoers can experience Flores' talents up close and personal. Besides photographs, the gallery celebrates the release of some branded erotic toys, such as a cast-resin replica of Flores' own sexy, sexy foot -- ensuring that no fetish gets left behind.
