SHABBAT BOP A LULA
After salvaging thousands of old LPs, Roger Bennett and Josh Kun co-wrote 2008's And You Shall Know Us By The Trail Of Our Vinyl , chronicling 60 years' worth of Jewish music, from cantorial and holiday to comedic and patriotic folk records. The book included a forward by Neil Sedaka, as well as contributions by Norman Lear, Sandra Bernhard and writer Etgar Keret. Two years later, Bennett (the man behind 2005's Bar Mitzvah Disco ) and Kun (a former L.A. Weekly contributor and current associate professor at USC's Annenberg School for Communication) have co-curated a companion exhibit that brings those kitschy album covers to life. Displayed in a re-created ââ¬Ë50s suburban living room, Jews on Vinyl includes listening stations where you can hear such records as pianist/bandleader Irving Fields' 1959 Bagels and Bongos and The Barry Sisters' 1962 Shalom . Future events include listening parties that explore the history of African-American artists covering Jewish songs and the Latin-Jewish fusion craze of the '50s.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: May 12. Continues through Sept. 5, 2010
