Revenge of the Gay Nerds
Tired of scouring convention exhibit halls for the one booth that focuses on LGBT comics? Annoyed with the lack of panels on queer issues in comics and genre media? Maybe it's time to check out Bent-Con. Billed as a comic book convention, "only gayer," Bent-Con is back for a second year of celebrating LGBT comics. The two-day event at downtown's Westin Bonaventure is a wonderful opportunity to meet the creators of stories with strong LGBT characters and themes. Among the artists on hand will be erotic comics master Patrick Fillion and Elfquest creator Wendy Pini, whose retelling of Edgar Allen Poe's Masque of the Red Death is one of the most intriguing and beautiful web comics we've seen. This year, Bent-Con also hosts a film festival focusing on genre works, which will run throughout both days. For the night owls, there's also "Flix After Dark," which runs from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. at the Bonaventure. Expect costumes as well: Saturday at 4 p.m. is the Costume Catwalk. Westin Bonaventure Hotel, 404 S. Figueroa St., dwntwn.; Sat., Dec. 3, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; "Flix After Dark" 9 p.m.-2 a.m.; Sun., Dec. 4, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; $15, $35 weekend pass.
