Return to Grey Gardens, Los Angeles!
What does Grey Gardens have in common with Mommie Dearest and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? besides crazy women with poorly penciled eyebrows? A large, gay cult following. David and Albert Maysles' 1975 documentary about the eccentric lives of Big Edie and Little Edie Beale, Jackie O's aunt and cousin, who lived in a run-down, 28-room East Hampton mansion with eight cats, fleas and raccoons (later made into a Broadway musical and a 2009 HBO film), has long been a fixture of gay culture. Peaches Christ and RuPaul's Drag Race season-five winner Jinkx Monsoon, hailing from San Francisco and Seattle respectively, add even more camp to their musical parody, Return to Grey Gardens, Los Angeles! Originally staged in S.F. last year, the production stars the drag divas as Big Peachy and Little Jinkxy, bickering mother-daughter drag queens who haven't left the Wilshire Ebell in 40 years. Joining them will be Thomas Dekker, Lady Bear, Squeaky Blonde and dancing cats and raccoons (no real animals were harmed in the making of this show). If you think you can outdo the cast, come dressed for the Either Edie Costume Contest. And if you'd like to return to the original Grey Gardens, LACMA screens the movie April 9, with director Albert Maysles in person. Wilshire Ebell, 4401 W. Eighth St., Mid-Wilshire; Sat., April 5, 8 p.m.; $30-$105. (323) 931-1277, peacheschrist.com.
Sat., April 5, 8 p.m., 2014 (Expired: 04/05/14)
