Red, White & Rock 'n' Roll
The Fourth of July becomes the froth of July during Red, White & Rock 'n' Roll — a July 4th Fireworks Spectacular, held at one of the best-kept secrets in the greater metropolitan Los Angeles area: Burbank's 5,000-seat Starlight Bowl, which, as any amphitheater nerd will tell you, is a concert venue of sensational natural beauty and acoustic delight. The July 4 show is emceed by former K-EARTH mainstay Brian Beirne, who is to oldies radio what Nanny Cantaloupe at KXLU is to children's music and what Chuck Niles was to jazz. Plus, it kicks off with The Surfaris doing "Wipe Out," a surfing earworm that's rocketed countless gremmies into heady waves and deadly sandbars. The fun also includes the dulcet tones of The Tokens, the group behind the hit version of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," the sweet melody of which originated with the great Zulu musician Solomon Linda; and Surfin' — The Beach Boys Tribute, which will make you see stars even without having your dad hit you square in the ear. Starlight Bowl, 1249 Lockheed View Drive, Burbank; Fri., July 4; parking opens at 4:30 p.m.; gates at 5:30 p.m.; concert 6:30 p.m., $15-$140. (818) 238-5300, starlightbowl.com.
