The L.A. County Bicycle Coalition is one of the loudest pro-bike advocates in the ongoing war between cyclists and motorists. Today the coalition teams up with Southern California CycloCross to host a fundraiser and bicycle race in the heart of Los Angeles State Historic Park. Dozens of elite bikers from CycloCross will brave a challenging bike course -- which includes a treacherous mud pit -- and vie for a spot in the national tournament. But this event is not just for diehard cyclists. Before the CycloCross pros have their turn, the course will be opened up to novice bikers and prepared for a "kiddie cross" at 1 p.m. There also will be a beginners clinic, a bike decorating contest and a 5K Fun Run. And when the sun goes down, racers and spectators can relax at Tour de Taste, a food festival catered by popular restaurants from the Old Bank District: Think tortas from Tony's, cupcakes from Big Man Bakes and Vietnamese dishes from Blossom, washed down with plenty of Sierra Nevada beer. All proceeds will be donated to LACBC, in protection of cyclists and pedestrians on the L.A. streets. L.A. State Historic Park, 1245 N. Spring St., dwntwn.; Sat., Nov. 30, noon-9 p.m.; $10 for members and racers, $20 others. (213) 629-2142, la-bike.org/tourdetaste.
Sat., Nov. 30, 12-9 p.m., 2013
