PLEASE DO NOT GET UP AND JOIN IN
Best known in this country for World Cup soccer teams, the bossa nova and Rio de Janeiro's annual Carnivale, Brazil is so much more. Grupo Corpo has gained an international reputation providing a glimpse of Brazil's array of dance and music forms from different regions of the world's fifth largest country. But this is no folkloric troupe. Like a composer building a symphony on folk melodies, Grupo Corpo's artistic director/choreographer Paulo Pederneiras stirs different regions' movement and music with ballet and contemporary dance, producing intoxicating choreographic cocktails that will be served up as the company arrives for three performances as part of the Dance at the Music Center series. The name, Grupo Corpo, translates as Body Group, reflecting an emphasis on the collective effort of the entire company which currently boasts 22 dancers. Founded in 1975, the company established itself as a major presence on the Brazilian dance scene then conquered Europe where it became a resident company in Lyon, France. An English critic captured the company's flavor when she wrote, "The result is fun, it's easy on the eye, and it makes you long to get up and join in."
