Pasadena Pageantry, Geek-Style
Not as dull as the annual Tournament of Roses, or as raunchy as the West Hollywood Halloween Costume Carnaval, Pasadena's (occasional) Doo Dah Parade is always wacky and tacky enough for adults but still fun for kids. This year's parade will be led by Queen Red Rosie tryouts were appropriately held in a bar earlier this month while Ron Stivers, owner of Poo Bah Records shop, is the grand marshal. Having moved eastward from the city's tourist trap Old Town for the second year, you can now park your lawn chair in front of such esteemed cultural institutions as Pasadena City College and Zankou Chicken, and wave at more than 1,000 marchers, including newbies The League of Steam, Cheesus Chrust Pizza Company, Iceland Queen and Ladies Auxiliary for Cultural Enrichment, in addition to perennial favorites the Men of Leisure, Disco Drill Team, Pasadena Zombies, BBQ and Hibachi Marching Grill Team and, of course, house band Snotty Scotty and the Hankies. And not one carnation or chrysanthemum in sight.
