Oh, Sandy

Without Sandra Bernhard, we really are nothing, to paraphrase the title of one of her early albums. The supremely sarcastic comedian hasn't performed locally in eons, but she returns with a vengeance in a new, humbly titled show, I Love Being Me, Don't You?, which is also the name of her new live album. Blending standup and her impressively varied singing, she takes on all of the major issues of the day, from the environment ("I'm all about the greenness") and America's wars ("They're running out of enemies and bad guys") to modern entertainment ("Comedy always freaks me out") and the perils of plastic surgery ("To do that to your face and still have those hands, does it really matter?"). When Bernhard's not writing desperately apologetic letters to Jackie Onassis and "twittering my fucking brains out, looking for some human contact," she's razing Arizona ("hell on Earth for a lady of my stature"), searching for truth ("Where the fuck is Tina Turner?"), bravely confronting mortality ("As long as I don't end up looking like Joan Rivers, I'll be fine") and marveling about Angelina Jolie in Salt ("Her tits are loaded, her pussy's shooting out rockets"). For this weekend's confab, Bernhard will be backed by "a smokin' rock band." REDCAT, 631 W.
