Offramp Ramps Up

Some galleries are as much an art project as the exhibitions they present. In Pasadena, that's certainly true of Jane Chafin and Chaz Alexander's gallery. The Offramp Gallery Fifth-Anniversary Party will be one of the gallery's magical garden openings, unveiling improvements to the lovingly restored Craftsman architecture and verdant grounds that make Offramp a destination in its own right. Of course, the heart and soul of the place are inside, in the elegantly transformed exhibition rooms, which have contained the works of some of L.A.'s best-loved painters, photographers, sculptors and book makers, many of whom (Lou Beach, Quinton Bemiller, Anita Bunn, Elaine Carhartt, Chuck Feesago, Mark Steven Greenfield, James Griffith, Edith Hillinger, Myron Kaufman, Nicholette Kominos, Susan Sironi and Patssi Valdez) return with new work for this important anniversary group show. Chafin's and Alexander's backgrounds cover painting, journalism and architecture, and their love for the place and its legacy has inspired them to revive the property as a living tribute to the Pasadena avant-garde that flourished back in the day. If the success of the first five years is anything to judge by, that community looks to be in bloom again. 1702 Lincoln Ave, Pasadena; Sun., Sept. 8, 2-5 p.m.; runs Fri.-Sun., 1-5 p.m., through Oct. 13; free.
