Not Your Parish Fish Fry

For the last year or so, longtime Los Angeles merchant Billy Shire has been presenting a "21st-century salon" at his monthly Thursday Night Fish Fry & Community Social, featuring poetry, performances and music. The 14th edition, "The Literary Event," promises memorably unhinged prose to boot. It's spearheaded by badass tattoo artist/author Jonathan Shaw, a get-around cat whose wild rep bristles with notable power points: He's the author of twisted tomes Narcisa: Our Lady of Ashes, Scab Vendor: Confessions of a Tattoo Artist and Love Songs to the Dead; the son of swing bandleader Artie; and the recipient of an 89-count indictment for criminal possession of a weapon in New York a few years back. Iggy Pop called him "the great nightmare anti-hero of the new age." Shaw has roped in some equally maverick participants: Tinseltown's favorite reformed dope addicts/authors, Jerry Stahl and Tom Sizemore, rock & roll weirdos Bob Forrest and Cheri Lovedog, and a gaggle of stalwart wordsmiths including Rich Ferguson, Dan Fante and Amy Fields, all converging for a program that's certain to cover some of the strangest sociocultural territory imaginable.
