No Sleep Till August

It's time once again for the good people of PØST to lose their dang minds, as the fifth iteration of the July "Kamikaze Shows" gets under way Monday evening. The concept is simple -- it's the implementation that's a killer. Every night in July (yes, including federal holidays), this bastion of indie art and conceptual curation hosts a new exhibition with its own reception. Deploying painting, drawing, sculpture, video, photography and whatever else is handy, this advent calendar of summer subculture attracts intrepid audiences and a broad swath of contemporary artists who live by the Kamikaze series motto: "Difficult times invite difficult gestures. By design, these exhibits remain close to art and distant from the other stuff." You really should try to catch as many as you can, if not all, because although the higher-profile shows -- folks like Joshua Aster, Carl Berg (of the Prospectus Gallery), Salomon Huerta, Maya Lujan (currently exhibiting at Carmichael Gallery in Culver City) and William Kaminski (of Control Room) -- probably will be the most crowded, if history is any indication, even the lesser-known options will be a great way to let yourself be taken by surprise.
