No RISK, No Reward

Kelly "RISK" Graval is a bona fide legend, a full-on godfather of the street-art scene and a gifted and mature painting talent, whether he's working inside the studio or out on the city walls. His solo show at Castanier Gallery has been curated by graffiti historian Roger Gastman, who helped pull together MOCA's "Art in the Streets" juggernaut. By all accounts, this show is full of surprises. For one thing, RISK has been changing up his style of late, becoming increasingly enamored of more expressive color-field paintings, which translate at mural scale to dynamic, Technicolor expressionism that would make Jackson Pollock drool with envy over their size and impact. It is a subject of much fascination, the degree to which muralists, writers and budding aerosol Picassos are capable of retaining the same intensity, urgency and appeal when the work cleans up and goes inside. But if what RISK can do is any indication, the complex balance of image, text, story and splash makes the transition with aplomb, setting a high bar for any whippersnapper looking to do the same. Plus the opening reception promises to fulfill Studio City's yearly hipster-tagger quotient in a single night.
