Never Mind the Rules: How to Rock at Love
With a rotating group art show and other fun events, Pinup Girl Boutique has become a hub during the monthly Ladies Night block parties held on Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank. This month, the retro-chic store is all about rule-breaking and rock & roll, two themes embodied in the title of the event itself, which also is the title of a new book by the evening's special guests, Susan Hyatt and L.A. Weekly's own nightlife columnist, Lina Lecaro. Never Mind the Rules: How to Rock at Love is a portmanteau that combines the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks and Nirvana's Nevermind with The Rules: Time-Tested Secrets for Capturing the Heart of Mr. Right, a 1995 self-help publication that effectively set back feminism 40 years by promoting game-playing to land a husband. Unlike The Rules, however, this book and its namesake get-together are all about encouraging women to be themselves, without worrying about how to snag a dude. Musicians and local personalities including all-girl rock band 21st Century Pandoras and Lucha VaVoom's Rita D'Albert discuss and perform songs inspired by their relationships. Other local lady scenesters also talk about love, dating and rock music, including Lecaro, who will read a piece about how relationships are not unlike rock cliches. Pinup Girl Boutique, 3606 W. Magnolia Blvd., Burbank; Fri., June 27, 6 p.m.; free. (818) 559-9586, amerikson.wix.com/ladiesnightout.
