MAS Attacks! Again!

It's double-header sequel night at the Torrance Art Museum, as TAM splits its galleries between a pair of hotly anticipated projects. Both captured the popular imagination their first time around, and now they're back with new surprises. First, for one night only, TAM cedes its walls to something like 100 local painters for the return engagement of MAS Attack (aka the Mutual Appreciation Society). Essentially a ginormous, public studio visit, a selected assortment of contemporary painters whom the organizers affectionately call "artists' artists" will head down to Torrance with enough work to fill an allotted area of wall and commence sharing ideas. Meanwhile, this reception also celebrates the opening of TAM's participation in the second SUR: biennial, a three-venue festival oriented around the idea of "south" as not only a place or a looked-to direction but also a metaphor for prospects that are less than bright. Within this model, artists participating in SUR: biennial II have an element of Latin American influence, as well as a sensitivity to how those broad cultural connections and divides manifest here in L.A. The other two venues will have already opened by then -- Rio Hondo College Art Gallery on Oct. 17, Cerritos College Art Gallery on Oct. 24. Combine your interests in this mas-bang-for-your-buck confluence of reasons to see what's up on the 405 South. Torrance Art Museum, 3320 Civic Center Drive, Torrance; Saturday, Oct. 26, 6-9 p.m.; SUR: biennial II continues through Nov. 9; Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; free. (310) 618-6340, torranceartmuseum.com.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Oct. 26. Continues through Nov. 9, 2013
