Make Us Laugh, Funny Boy!
If you're not the type of person who likes to be singled out during a comic's performance, it's best to sit way in the back for Todd Barry's The Crowd Work Tour show. The NYC-based comic hits Largo on Sunday.
L.A. WEEKLY: For your Largo show, it's "an entire show of riffing and bantering with the audience." What's the worst that can happen?
TODD BARRY: The show will be terrible, and I'll feel shitty when I deposit my HUGE CHECK!
How do you tell if an audience member is ripe for riffing on?
I think that deep down, everyone is "ripe for riffing."
Who's the worst type?
Some people have that "please don't talk to me" face. I leave them alone. Not really interested in making someone uncomfortable. I guess that makes me a "great guy."
What other comics are the best with working with audience members?
There's a guy named Mike Sweeney. He's now the head writer at Conan, but he used to do stand-up. He was pretty masterful at crowd work. There are others, but I'm in the middle of doing laundry, so I can't think of them. You want me wearing clean clothes in L.A., right?
What's the strangest display of affection you've received from a fan?
There was one time I did a show in Cleveland. I told a joke, and this woman in the audience laughed and applauded. I know!
What's the best thing you purchased this year?
Plane ticket to Guatemala. Actual vacation. I never do that. FULL DISCLOSURE: Some of the vacation was paid for at the end of last year.
What's your worst habit?
I'm addicted to being cute and smart.
What will you do for fun while in L.A.?
L.A. is a show business town. I'm in show business. No time for fun. Too many meetings!
Largo at the Coronet, 366 N. La Cienega Blvd.; Sun., Jan. 27, 8 p.m.; $25. (310) 855-0350.
