Lucy and This Guy With Congas
When not getting in and out of jams with his redheaded screwball wife the first lady of comedy, Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz created some of TV's most memorable music. For Tropicana Nights: A Salute to the Music of I Love Lucy, the Paley Center celebrates both I Love Lucy's 60th anniversary and the show's famous songs, from the theme track to Arnaz's signature conga number "Babalu," a 1940s Cuban standard he had already helped popularize back in his pre-TV bandleader days. Both singers and musicians in their own right, the couple's offspring, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr., join composer and conductor Ron Abel for a discussion and performance of these songs, in addition to the era's other popular Latin and Western tunes, plus selections from last year's touring musical revue Babalu! and Lucie Arnaz's 2010 album Latin Roots. Paley Center, 465 N. Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills; Fri., Dec. 9, 6:30 p.m.; $25. (310) 786-1091.
Fri., Dec. 9, 6:30 p.m., 2011
