Jen DeNike

New York-based multimedia artist Jen DeNike continues her ongoing exploration into the intersection of image, movement, ritual, and personal history in her latest show, Jen DeNike: "The Star Card" at Chinatown's Anat Ebgi (nee The Company). Using performance -- both live and captured in video works -- as well as collage, painting, drawing, installation and sculpture, in previous work DeNike has explored dance, meditation, and obsession. For Star Card, DeNike takes her cue from Tarot iconography, specifically the Major Arcana card that features a powerful arrangement of the planets and the elements, combining it with her own personal epiphanies following the discovery of her grandmother's mystical gifts and the possibility that she may have inherited them. "Am I a witch? Can I see your future? Can I see spirits? Can I levitate? Maybe the last two. Ha! I'm not a witch, more of a magician." The exhibition includes a haunting new video work capturing DeNike at river's edge working some of that old-school mystical magic herself, plus occasional performance events TBA, and paper and canvas pieces fashioned from the video's artifacts and inspirations -- but it's especially rewarding to catch the opening night, when her two-hour live installation work Full Moon Fever will be performed in its entirety.
