ICE PICK OF THE WEEK
As spring tilts ever closer toward summer, our memories of February's Winter Olympics (not to mention March's seemingly overshadowed ISU World Figure Skating Championships) are melting even quicker than the remaining snow atop the San Gabriel Mountains. Back in February, the dashing and elegant U.S. men's figure skater Evan Lysacek (pictured) was challenging the more athletically powerful and heavily favored Russian 2006 gold medalist Yevgeny Plushenko at the Olympics. Now that Lysacek is battling the Pussycat Dolls' Nicole Scherzinger for dance-floor supremacy on Dancing With the Stars, does anyone even remember that he took the gold in Vancouver (causing a notorious hissy fit from sore-loser Plushenko)? The annual Stars on Ice exhibition comes to town to remind us that L.A. is, at heart, underneath the palm trees and sandy beaches, a veritable winter wonderland. If nothing else, Southern California is home to a relatively large number of top skaters, including Arcadia's charming Mirai Nagasu, a masterful spinner who wasn't expected to be a factor this year but surprisingly found herself in first place after the short skate at the Worlds (unfortunately, the young and still-evolving phenom fell apart in the free skate, but she's expected to be a major contender at the 2014 Olympics). Lysacek and Nagasu are joined at tonight's show by the ever-charismatic and ultragraceful Sasha Cohen (who made an impressive comeback this year after a long layoff), Rachael Flatt (an energetic, consistent jumper), Alissa Czisny (a notably artistic, if erratic performer), Yuka Sato (a former world champion from Japan) and Michael Weiss (a three-time U.S. national champ). The fun is doubled by the awesome, death-defying Chinese pairs team Xue Shen & Hongbo Zhao, and two captivating U.S. ice dancing teams: Meryl Davis & Charlie White (this year's Olympic silver medalists) and the always alluring Tanith Belbin & Ben Agosto, who, sadly, are retiring from competitive skating.
