He's Super Tiki

Hard to believe that acclaimed Hawaiian Exotica consortium Don Tiki has never before made a public appearance in Los Angeles, but with the arrival of Don Tiki's Hot Lava Holiday Show, thankfully, the cherry finally gets popped. Don Tiki is a jumbo aggregation of a dozen esteemed jazz-and-beyond players, who operate with the benediction of the late, great, Exotica spearhead Martin Denny (he played on their 1997 debut disc, The Forbidden Sounds of Don Tiki) that also boasts the presence of Lopaka Colon, carrying on the grand tradition of percussion, jungle and bird calls perfected by his father, August, on all those dazzling Arthur Lyman LPs of yore. This ranks as a certifiably luxurious safari through a dreamy, evocative musical landscape. Replete with pattalar (bamboo xylophones), Burmese gongs and boobams (yes, boobams) Don Tiki goes the full rum-drenched, grass-skirted, Aloha shirt–clad, pop-Polynesian route, augmented by dancers, comedy and more than a few special guests. While they're best known for numbers like "The Natives Are Restless" and "Bam-Boozled," they will, despite the naked incongruity, offer some seasonal fare: "Even though we're tiki-worshipping pagans," producer Lloyd Kandell says, "we'll drop six new holiday songs to get into the spirit of things." Should be one mother of a Mele Kalikimaka. Walt Disney Concert Hall, 111 S. Grand Ave., dwntwn.; Thurs., Dec. 20, 8 p.m.; $31-$89. (323) 850-2000, laphil.com.
