Go Fest, Young Arts Lover

Two fantastic — and free! — arts festivals take over downtown today, which is really pretty amazing when you think about it. But don't think too hard — just go. Perform Chinatown takes place for the fourth year with the mother of performance artists, Karen Finley, doing her first L.A. show in 14 years. The lineup includes 30-plus "actions, installations, manifestations and interventions" with artists both local and international, including Matthew Timmons, Oguri, Hans Fjellestad, Max Maslansky, Finishing School, Simone Gad, Jeremy Mikush, Dr. Jerry Siegel, Omar Mirza and Oriana Small. Venues in and around Chung King Road, Chinatown; Sat., July 21, 4 p.m.-mid.; free. performchinatown.com.
Meanwhile, the Downtown Arts District hosts Bloomfest L.A., which sounds very Victorian but is actually named for the late community activist Joel Bloom. Bands will play on three stages, and there's an oldies lineup that will appeal to anyone who remembers Al's Bar, with Mike Watt and the Missingmen, the Gears, Carnage Asada, Sukia, Saccharine Trust with Joe Baiza, Downtown Devil Dogs and many more. Guided art tours, food, eco-fun and kiddie krap abound, too. Downtown Arts District, Third Street & Traction Avenue, dwntwn.; Sat., July 21, 2-10 p.m.; free. bloomfestla.com.
Sat., July 21, 2 p.m., 2012
