Get Lit

Film tends to be the dominant art form people experience these days — but occasionally, film and literature have their run-ins and we're all better for the bloody pulp that results from their collision. Noted literate Gerry Fialka (pictured) presents the second annual Lit Show Film Festival, screening rare literature films in anticipation of the annual The Lit Show on July 14. It's a cinematic taster for the evening starring singers Suzy Williams and Brad Kay performing works based on words by Vonnegut, Beckett, Capote, Kerouac, Salinger, Chandler, Kipling and more literary legends. By "literature films," Fialka means movies that were based on works of literature — e.g., Jack Kerouac writing the 1959 short film Pull My Daisy based on his play — often with direct input from the authors themselves. If you're looking for the closest thing to a visual version of the words the greats wrote, literature films are your bag. Beyond Baroque, 681 Venice Blvd., Venice; Thurs., July 5, 7 p.m.; free.
