Funny, You Don't Look Witty
OK, so admittedly it gets better but what happens in the downtime before things actually do improve? The Third Annual Pretty, Witty and Gay Show (circle one or more) is impresario Wendy Hammers' entertaining presentation of one evening of "hilarious and horrifying" true-life stories featuring lesbian, gay, bi and trans performers and artists, just in time for Gay Pride Month. In point of fact, not everything you'll hear will be some Herculean struggle to overcome. You might just as well hear a story about the pitfalls of laying paper clips end to end, or a story about getting lost in the preteen maternity section of a vast and soulless department store. Much like her other spoken-word endeavors Tellapalooza and the travelogs of Wish You Were Here Hammers' showcase of voices from the less-publicized aspects of society offers vital insight into where we are as a society now. Or, as Jean-Luc Godard once told Agnes Varda, "It's the margin that holds the book together." Celebration Theater, 7051 Santa Monica Blvd., W. Hlywd.(310) 828-1500, wendyhammers.com.
