Fuck Dance, Let's Art

"I realized back then that simply moving the little squares on graph paper, I could show anything: I could show motion, it could represent notes, it could represent color ... They could describe words or categories ... I felt I had discovered a new language." Long before she'd even heard the term "concept art," Channa Horwitz was developing a unique system of shapes and textures she called "composing time," which took visual art past the simple canvas and into a limitless universe of dance, music and virtually any form she chose to express. The revered L.A. experimental artist and dance pioneer is still cookin' at 78, and this week, Beach=Culture presents a Pacific Standard Time event entitled Channa Horwitz's Variations on Sonakinetography #3. The multimedia experience features Horwitz's series of numbered geometric drawings that invite interpretation through dance, musical composition and installation, and includes a performance of Poem Opera for 8, and two interpretations of Sonakinetography #3: a light show and dance choreographed by Horwitz's daughter Ellen Davis; and a musical performance by percussionist Corey Fogel. In line with free-form philosophy, you can just come and go, as there will be no seats and no set arrival time. In other words, you, the audience, are part of the installation.
