Francesco Vezzoli: Cinema Vezzoli

There are folks who love Hollywood, and then there are folks who really love Hollywood. Multimedia artist Francesco Vezzoli's appreciation of cinema goes far beyond love, approaching an almost devotional reverence for the angels-with-dirty-faces dream-factory myth and magic that Hollywood represents in global culture. And he's not afraid of budget-busting quality in pursuit of his vision. "Cinema Vezzoli" is part of The Trinity, a career survey presenting different aspects of his work at three institutions: MAXXI in Rome (a majestic sculptural installation); PS1 in New York (plans to move an entire church from Europe to museum grounds are still being negotiated); and here in L.A., where, fittingly, his love of movies takes center stage. For more than a decade, Vezzoli has been making commercials for fake luxury goods, short performance-based videos, and more expansive trailers for imaginary films — starring a dazzling array of A-list collaborators from Helen Mirren and Natalie Portman to Roman Polanski and the Bolshoi Ballet. "Cinema Vezzoli" presents a survey of these and other major works, including new surprises created for MOCA and MOCAtv. MOCA Grand Avenue, 250 S.
